Learn About Conducting Health Systems Research for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN)
One in five children have a special health care need. Yet 85% of these children and families say the systems they rely on don’t function well.
Our research looks at the many functions of the health care system to identify problems and create solutions. The aim? To help these children and their families thrive.
Who We Are
The Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs National Research Network (CYSHCNet) brings academic researchers and lived experience partners (i.e., CYSHCN themselves and/or family/caregivers) together to study the health care system issues that matter most to CYSHCN and their families.
Our research aims to help us:
- Measure quality of life and wellbeing of children and their families
- Better understand the issues CYSHCN face across their lifetimes
- Inform policymakers on how to make systems of care more equitable, accessible, and affordable
What is the Pathways Research Program?
The Pathways Research Program teaches participants about health systems research that supports CYSHCN, their families, and providers. CYSHCNet is committed to making this program accessible to anyone who is interested in learning more about CYSHCN research and how it is conducted, including students and trainees in health and health-related professions. Individuals from historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to participate.
- Research experience is not required.
- There is no cost to participate.
- If you are a student and research is required as part of your program, Pathways provides guidance and tools on many topics, including your career.
About the Pathways Research Program
Over the course of a year, participants will meet with CYSHCN researchers from across the U.S. during four, one-hour meetings via Zoom (mandatory). In addition, participants will:
- Interact with CYSHCN research professionals for topical instruction and career guidance.
- Participate in a research project based on your interests, the needs of the project, and project availability. (Projects may not be available.)
- Access a series of online instructional videos on important CYSHCN research topics.
- Attend CYSHCNet virtual meetings for our Emerging Investigators Program for early career investigators (optional).
Once the program is complete, participants may have the option to continue engaging with CYSHCNet as schedules and interests allow.
